Squamish house prices up 24.6% in the last year
so says the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (published in the newspaper today). The benchmark price for a detached house (defined as a house typical for the area) in Squamish is …. are you ready … $522,590K. While you could probably buy a house with some features for that amount, a lot of the housing is ’80s rancher style or what I think is called a ‘Vancouver special.’ Amazing. Given that real estate in the U.S. is down 27% I wonder how much longer this will continue? And the people who have lived here for years, working average paying jobs and were not able to buy three to five years ago when property was cheap, are not able to afford the market here. I wonder how the community will attract and keep provincial and municipal workers (nurses, RCMP, etc. etc.)?
