Two Models of Health Care Rationing

Sick and Sicker

Everyone knows that Canadians live longer and have lower infant mortality rates than Americans. In Sicko, Michael Moore suggests that a Canadian-style medical system would solve this problem. Surprisingly, the evidence indicates that it would not.

A cross-border team of 17 researchers (including high-profile supporters of the Canadian system) examined a variety of medical problems, including cancer, coronary artery disease, chronic illness and surgical procedures. With the single exception of end-stage kidney disease, where Canadian patients fared better, they found no consistent difference in patient outcomes between the two nations.1 As I have argued elsewhere, the United States has the worst health statistics in the industrialized world because it is the most unequal society in the industrialized world.2

Although Canada’s medical system does not produce generally better patient outcomes, it is more equitable and far more economical. In 2003, the average American spent almost twice as much for medical care as the average Canadian. Exorbitant medical bills are a constant worry and a major cause of personal bankruptcy. Profit-taking is responsible for the high cost of American medicine. However, the Canadian system is also subject to market forces.

A Subprime Chernobyl?

The Bank for International Settlements issued a warning last week that the Federal Reserve’s monetary policies have created an enormous equity bubble which could lead to another "Great Depression". The UK Telegraph says that, "The BIS–the ultimate bank of central bankers–pointed to a confluence a worrying signs, citing mass issuance of new-fangled credit instruments, soaring levels of household debt, extreme appetite for risk shown by investors, and entrenched imbalances in the world currency system."

The IMF and the UN have issued similar warnings, but they’ve all been ignored by the Bush administration. Neither Bush nor the Federal Reserve is interested in "course correction". They plan to stick with the same harebrained policies until the end.

Mexico’s Rightwing Tries to Claim Leftist Painter’s Soul

Free Frida Kahlo!

By JOHN ROSS

Mexico City.

The battle for the possession of Frida Kahlo’s soul erupted this June 13th on the alabaster esplanade of Mexico’s maximum house of culture, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, a rococo wedding cake of a palace that is slowly sinking into this mega-city’s subsoil. The occasion for the artful free-for-all was a visit by freshman president Felipe Calderon to cut the ribbon at the Mexican government’s official homage marking the centennial of the painter and her feverish oeuvre. Kahlo’s work is considered one of Mexico’s most lucrative national treasures.

Mosaic - quote (and blog/books/websites)

"You yourself are a mosaic: shattered, fragmented, and awesome to behold."  Anonymous

I saw this quote, attributed to Anonymous, in a Mosaic book that I looked at in a bookstore in Ajijic, Mexico.  When I did a search it came up on "Welcome to Grace Space" blog (see http://chrissiegracespace.blogspot.com/)  Turns out the blogster has done a mosaic book - not the one I saw in Mexico - but it looks interesting:  Wild Tiles: Creative Mosaic Projects for Your Home (Paperback) by Chrissie Grace.

She also have a website: http://www.wildtilesmosaics.net/

She is reading The Complete Mosaic Handbook (I will have to look this up).  And the work of her favourite mosaic artists:
