This new open access medical journal is produced by many of the editors who were fired at the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) for their coverage of politically sensitive issues.  The volunteer publisher is John Willinsky (author of The access principle:  The case for open access to research and scholarship and founder of the Public Knowledge Project).  Yeah!

update from trip to Campbell River

April 25, 2007

A day jaunt to Campbell River is far from Squamish.  Left Squamish at 630 am and arrived home the next day at 1230 am.  Poor e-dog.  Did not go ‘oyster catching’ - you need a permit to do so (good).  Did discover where I think I want to live … Bowser!

We did have a good but short visit with Allie in Campbell River and will have to go back when the salmon are running as she is right on the Campbell River.  It was good to get out on open water and not be in the shadow of ‘The Chief’ for a day.

Fingers crossed!

R. has face to face interview tomorrow - hope he gets it!

“Famed Vietnam War reporter Halberstam dies”

April 24, 2007

I haven’t read The Making of a Quagmire.  Such a shame that Halberstam didn’t  write about Iraq/Bush era.

Heaven’s Radio: May 18, 2007 (Ottawa)

Ah, too bad I am so far away!  I used to go hear them play at what was then called the ‘Tulip Valley’ enroute to Wakefield.  I will forward this to my friend Brian in Fredericton as his brother used to play in the band.  Brings back memories …

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Ottawa, On, March 25, 2007
In the early 1970’s Heaven’s Radio were pioneers in Ottawa’s then fledgling blues / R&B scene. By mid-decade they were also giving many Ottawans their first taste of reggae, as well as writing original songs. The music was convincingly rootsy, charmingly home-grown, and often surprisingly inventive. Soulful vocals and instrumental improvisation were supported by a groove that wouldn’t quit. The result was great dance / party music that you could also seriously listen to and enjoy. The band developed a devoted following, playing clubs, concerts and festivals from coast to coast. They were also a natural choice to open for such acts as the Butterfield Blues Band (NAC), Jimmy Cliff (NAC), Peter Tosh (Camp Fortune), the Police (Theatre St. Denis, Montreal) and Muddy Waters (Queen’s University). By the end of the decade the Radio had released two highly acclaimed albums, Active and Uptown Babies which will be re-released in a boxed CD set (digitally re-mastered, with bonus tracks) at the Rendez-vous.

Local fans will remember hearing Heaven’s Radio at venues like Squire’s Tavern, Le Hibou, the Wakefield Inn, or Carleton University. For many the band was part of the social and musical fabric of the day. In the days before “alternative” became a buzzword, the band had a definite “counter-culture” appeal. Heaven’s Radio was not so above-ground as to be a household word, a bit too esoteric and recalcitrant to be easily packaged and marketed, and beloved by many.

Three original members of Heaven’s Radio will be in the core band for the Rendez-vous. Terry Gillespie (band leader, guitar, vocals, harmonica) released his first solo CD Brother Of The Blues in December 2006. It is presently enjoying international airplay and has been on Saturday Night Blues charts for 3 months. Vince Halfhide (guitar, vocals) is a charter member and mainstay of the Mighty Popo Band. Corky Kealey (drums) performs regularly in the house band for the legendary Thursday night blues jam at Irene’s Pub in Ottawa. John Feihl, the band’s original bassist is expected to make a cameo appearance. Sadly, long-standing bassist Bob Blackler passed away recently. He will be greatly missed.

In addition, Bill Stevenson, former member of Heaven’s Radio will play piano during dinner. He will later join the band for several numbers, as will Jody Golick, former member of the band (saxophone), Ted Gerow, frequent sideman (organ), Dave Carty, frequent sideman (drums), as well as guests: Trevor Brewster (guitar), Stephen Barry & Jeffery Grosvenor (bass) and Gordon Adamson (drums).

damn - Author David Halberstam dies in crash

330 am

April 21, 2007

There was loud banging on our door.  A young woman was crying hysterically.  Requested that we call a cab.  While trying to do so the newspaper delivery woman pulled in to our driveway.  She kindly gave the woman a ride home.  Another mystery.

Good thing the plan to go visit Allie in Campbell River is for tomorrow.  We are taking the 830 am ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay (Nanaimo) and then driving north to Campbell River with a stop (possibly) to ‘catch’ some oysters.

a new bird siting - identified!

With the arrival of spring in these parts, there are also new (to me) birds in the hood.  I just saw one I had never seen before:  sparrow size, grey with yellow splotches and a white patch on its tail.  How is this for a description?  I went to WhatBird:  The Ultimate Bird Guide (at http://identify.whatbird.com/mwg/_/0/attrs.aspx) and I think the bird I saw is some type of warbler (definately not a goldfinch).  Our neighbor has a few bird field guides so I will ask to borrow them and see if I can make a definitive identification.

The mystery bird fits the description of a Yellow Rumped Warbler.

Phew - “Catholic Church buries limbo after centuries”

By Philip Pullella Fri Apr 20, 2:21 PM ET

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Roman Catholic Church has effectively buried the concept of limbo, the place where centuries of tradition and teaching held that babies who die without baptism went.

In a long-awaited document, the Church’s International Theological Commission said limbo reflected an "unduly restrictive view of salvation."
