now in guadalajara
and it is a bit of a shock after the lazy pace of the beach. the day after my last post it became apparent that there was no money in the one bank machine in barra. of course, i hadn´t planned for this and had about .30 when i realized there was no dinero. what was encouraging was that two groups of strangers … gringos … gave me a total of $15. to see me through until the bank machine was replenished. i intended to pay them back but by the time there was money they had left. i also went for a lovely home cooked meal of fresh fish (dorado) prepared in three different ways as well as salads including a potato salad. the dorado (which apparently weiged about 45 lbs.) was caught by some people from Alaska that were staying in my hotel who invited me to tag along as the resident across the street PK had offered to grill it. the kindness of strangers.
and now i am in noisy and smelly guadalajara. it is the third largest city in mexico with 6 million people approximately. my niece carolina came to meet me downtown outside the teatro delgollado on one of the central plazas last night. she has school all day so i will meet her again this evening. tomorrow night i am invited for dinner at her host family. carolina is enjoying her stay and tries to travel as much as possible on the weekends. over semana santa she plans to head south with a friend to san cristobal and area. i will take pictures of us and post them when i get home next week.
am off by autobus to what is thought of as the shopping mecca in guadalajara for the afternoon to look around.
