barra de navidad via mexico city, queretaro, san miguel de allende …
A couple of long bus trips since arriving last Sunday evening. Yesterday I travelled from San Miguel de Allende to Guadalajara (5+ hours and the same movie twice) and then continued on to Manzanillo (another 4 hours) and finally a short bus ride to Barra de Navidad. I just took the first hotel room I came across without checking the room first as it was around 11 pm and I was tired. The room was fine but it smelled alot like a cistern or sewer. Luckily there was an overhead fan. I checked out this morning and am treating myself to two nights in a hotel right on the beach. I can hear the ocean (one of my favourite sounds) and there is a swimming pool that is open until 1130 pm.
I walked to the nearby town of Melaque this afternoon, a two km. stroll along the beach. Both Melaque and Barra de Navidad are fairly small towns on the Pacific (south of Puerto Vallarta and north of Manzanillo). I asked around about a book exchange while I was in Melaque and was told that one of the world’s best existed in Barra de Navidad! I took the local bus back rather than walk and headed to the book exchange called "Beer Bob’s". I was sad to read that Beer Bob died in 2006 but the book exchange still operates with volunteers. I found a copy of Goffman’s Stigma, a book I have wanted to read for a long time (it was written in 1963). It is still a classic.
Now I am going to have a cerveza and pescado while watching the sun go down. Hasta luego!
