Yippee!

I finished the article I was working on!  As it is for publication, I can’t post it but will post the url once it is available.  I have been working on it steadily since I returned from Mexico.  I may even get to do something fun like having a steam at the local pool tomorrow evening.

Molly Ivins RIP

February 26, 2007

I missed the news that Molly Ivins died while I was in Mexico.

For a tribute by Ralph Nader entitled:

"Kickin’ Ass is Fun"

The Good Fight of Molly Ivins

see http://www.counterpunch.org/nader02052007.html

The article begins thus:

If writers, who lasso injustice and give light to justice, lift up our standards of fair play, then on January 31st, the nation suffered a genuine decline. For Molly Ivins lost her seven year battle with cancer and joined what her friend Bill Moyers called "that great Purgatory of Journalists in the Sky."

Author and columnist syndicated in 400 newspapers, Austin, Texas-based Molly Ivins skewered pompous politicians, raked over corporate criminals and spotlighted the struggles of regular folks against the repressions and maraudings of the Big Boys and their Big Power.

Very elaborate and beautiful outfits.

The person who took this picture says:  "Henry croft is my great great grandad from his daughter violet crofts line".  The picture is released to the public domain.

Response from Lauren re: MS/tysabri

Hi Lauren:  For some reason, the blog’s spaminator blocked your comments so I will post them here.  I think it is important that Canadians with MS know about tysabri and its availability here as it was recently given the go ahead by Health Canada.  Best regards.

Thank you Ella for posting links not only to my Blog, but
also to the website (of which I am a proud member)
http://www.MSPatientsForChoice.org/. Some of us that are
members of the website  worked very hard to voice our views
at the FDA AC Tysabri hearings in March \’06, in an effort
to bring Tysabri back to MS sufferers that want and need it.

Thanks again!  Best wishes…Lauren :)

This week in The Squamish Chief - two local deaths linked to heroin

Top stories for the week of Feb 23 - Mar 1
Two local deaths linked to heroinFeature Story
Addictions outreach workers needed, says Community Services
Sylvie Paillard
spaillard@squamishchief.com

"Two young women are dead, a man was feared dead and at least two more residents were hospitalized last week in heroin-related incidents. Twenty-six-year-old Niomi Joanette died Sunday (Feb. 11), and Angie Brown, also in her twenties, died Wednesday (Feb. 14) after suffering severe health problems exacerbated by heroin use. A third man was hospitalized and a fourth man was missing and initially feared dead in other heroin-related incidents last week. Several days later, on Monday (Feb. 19), a fifth young man was hospitalized after heroin use."

the rest of the article can be found at http://www.squamishchief.com/madison/WQuestion.nsf/SCallstories?OpenView

Squamish has a population of around 15,000 and such tragedies impact the lives of many.  One of the things I find confusing is that because the two women who died had other health issues there was no public health warning or announcement in the community regarding the potential dangers of the heroin available.  If there was ‘contaminated’ aspirin on the market that killed once person there would be a public health information blitz even if the person who died had other health problems.  Very strange to me.

Phew - one more day of work this week

February 23, 2007

This week has been busy, busy as I get caught up at work (and we are still short-staffed).  The wait-listing for our program is now at 20 and there were three more inquiries today.  I want to be back on holiday even though I am happy to be home!  After three weeks of adventure, I am in the throes of mega-work and low-level panic as I have to write an article (it is late), a past student wants a recommendation in the mail by Saturday and the biggy:  looming tax preparation.  This is the first year I am completing the corporate tax form and it is making me anxious and a full-scale headache ensues when I consider what will be entailed in doing my personal taxes with being self-employed some of the year as well as figuring out moving deductions.  Seems like it is back to nose-to-the-grindstone (according to "The Phrase Finder" at http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/217200.html the most likely origin of this expression comes "from the practice of knife grinders when sharpening blades to bend over the stone, or even to lie flat on their fronts, with their faces near the grindstone in order to hold the blades against the stone" and "that all the early citations refer to holding someone’s nose to the grindstone as a form of punishment").  Yup, this is how it feels after a three week vacation.
