off to mexico!

Booked my ticket to Mexico City this week.  I leave on January 28th and return on February 15th.  So far my destinations include a visit to see my niece in Guadalajara and San Miguel de Allende (and the hot springs).  I will do some research about other possible side-trips to Zacatecas and a beach town on the Pacific Coast.

My friend I.S., and her son Adrian, are going to come to Squamish for a visit next Sunday!  Tomorrow morning is the bald eagle count in Brackendale so their timing is perfect.

TPL, my blog mentor, gave me some hints about blogging and I just found the indent function … cool!  Thanks, TPL.  I often just blog urls for articles I hope to read at a later date or other information I find interesting.  But considering I go on about references I should take more time and make sure I reference information (I know I didn’t reference a recent post about hot springs, for example, as I just wanted to keep the list of spots (but it was from The Globe and Mail!)  There are probably other omissions too, mea culpa.  Now that I know where the indent function is I will try to use it!

Maher Arar’s website

Maher Arar has his own website, where you can learn more about the specifics and timeline of his ordeal. There are selected news items and writing by Arar himself:  see www.maherarar.ca

Two books that put Arar’s stories in context are Jennifer K. Harbury’s Truth, Torture, and the American Way: The History and Consequences of U.S. Involvement in Torture (Boston: Beacon Press, 2005) and America’s Disappeared: Secret Imprisonment, Detainees, and the “War on Terror” by Rachel Meeropol, Barbara Olshansky, Steven MacPherson Watt, and Michael Ratner (New York: Seven Stories Press, 2005). These critical texts examine the political machinery behind the detention of suspected terrorists.
